Project Information
Project Overview
Sports Boulevard is a large-scale urban development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that brings together sports, mobility, recreation, and public space, while the architectural infrastructure provides for a connected and dynamic urban environment.
The project included the metal works of the spine canopy and facade of the pedestrian bridge, which required careful fabrication and detailing to achieve a functional and aesthetic performance that integrated seamlessly with the bridge’s structure.
Architectural Pedestrian Bridge Spine Canopy
The pedestrian bridge spine canopy becomes a unique architectural feature within the sports boulevard development and provides sheltered space for circulation, while also adding a significant visual presence to the urban fabric.
It was customized, which required strict control of geometry, dimensions, interfaces, and surface detailing to ensure that fabricated components are matched to the structure of the bridge with maintenance of consistent architectural lines.
Bridge Facade Design & Metal Fabrication
Customized metal elements that match the geometry of the bridge structure imbue the canopy with a natural harmony that creates smooth and seamless appearances, as well as consistent details throughout the pedestrian structure.
Precision fabrication provided dimensional accuracy between all connected components of the facade, each of which was prepared with a profile, interface, and finish to ensure accurate and reliable installation and a refined architectural integration.
Design Coordination & Custom Solution
Canopy and facade elements had to match up tightly with the pedestrian bridge geometry and construction needs, and required careful coordination between the project’s architectural design, bridge geometry, and fabrication details.
Precise dimensions, profiles, connections and finishes were accommodated by custom fabrication, allowing the metalwork to follow the architectural form whilst maintaining consistent quality throughout the bridge canopy and facade applications.
Installation & Architectural Integration
The canopy and facade elements were synchronized with the pedestrian bridge structure to ensure precise positioning, the correct alignment of interfaces, and secure connections and smooth integration during the installation of the structure.
Common detailing was used throughout the entire metalwork detail of the spine, canopy, and facade in the bridge design for visual continuity and to accommodate pedestrian movement, durability, and architectural performance over time.
Project Results: A Distinctive Urban Landmark
The metal canopy and facade components, finished with functional infrastructure and carefully considered metalwork, add a unique architectural touch to the pedestrian bridge, harmonizing with the broader context of the Sports Boulevard.
The project showcases the potential of architectural metalwork to bring together a repertoire of formal and technical elements and to enhance large-scale urban projects with a unified aesthetic, structural integration, and long service life.
